THIS TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED
We will leave Trowbridge around 9.30am fFOR or the short trip to Winchester, arriving around 11am. You will have about just over 2 hours to explore the city, visit the Cathedral and have lunch. The Christmas market will be open for any last-minute presents.
We will leave for Whitchurch and the Silk Mills about 1.30pm arriving in time for the 2pm tour.
There has been a Mill on this site since 1813. It wasn’t until 1886 that production started in earnest after John Hide bought the Mill at Auction. The Mill wove silk for Burberry producing 22 different colours of silk lining for their famous raincoats. In 1956 Stephen Walters bought the Mill to keep it producing silk. In 1985 the Mill fell into disrepair. It was rescued by Hampshire Building Reservation Trust who restored the Mill. The Mill opened in 1990 as a working Museum under the management of the Whitchurch Silk Mill Trust. Our visit will include a guided tour of the watermill, the Mill building and its Victorian machinery. The beautiful garden on the banks of the river Test and not forgetting the Shop. It sells scarves, ties and giftware made from the Mills’ exclusive silks. There are stairs, but there is a lift.
Before we leave, we will have tea/coffee and biscuits. See: www.whitchurchsilkmill.org.uk
The cost for this trip is: £17.00 which includes the coach, drivers tip. Entry to the Mill is £10 making a total of £27.00.
