A talk by Alan Cooper
Transporter Bridges were one of the mechanical engineering wonders of the Victorian & Edwardian periods. Up until the 30's, 22 were built world wide (5 in the UK), with 10 remaining (3 in the UK). If fact one is just 1 hour from Trowbridge.
Alan will explain, with illustrations and video, why they were built, how they work and why they did not endure. He will conclude with some modern novel engineering structures that meet the same objective.
