New group - Dancercise
Date: 01/06/2010

If you like to dance and keep fit, this is the group for you. You don't need a partner and you don't need super co-ordination. Just bring some comfortable shoes and have a go. It's a new group, run by a lively young dance teacher, Helen, who takes us step by step through simple jazz routines to brilliant music. It's exercise for the brain, as well as the legs and it's a lot of fun even if we do get our lefts and rights mixed up. It's a great way to get a gentle work out, so why not come along.

We meet at 10 o'clock on Saturdays at the Peace Memorial Hall in North Bradley. Please check before you turn up.

Leaders are Dinah Starkey and Beryl Baggs.

Bookworms Group

Science & Engineering Group Talk 13th April
Date: 12/04/2010

At the next meeting of the Science and Engineering Group David Feather is going to make a presentation on Roman Engineering and Technology. You may know something about the Romans, but how much do you know about how the Romans made their buildings and structures? If the answer is "not much", you have the chance to join in the meeting and, perhaps, learn a little more. If you know something about the subject, come along and add to the discussion.

The meeting is at 2.30pm on Tuesday, 13 April at the Progressive Hall in North Bradley. This is the red brick hall close to the Rising Sun pub and there is parking."

Less than 2 days to the completion of Digital Switchover
Date: 05/04/2010

Hopefully you have all successfully retuned your digital tuners on 24 March 2010 (I successfully managed mine remotely from India!). Don't forget a second retune of your digital tuners is required after 1200hrs on 7 April 2010. After this date you will no longer be able to receive analogue TV transmissions from the Mendip Transmitter and most if not all local repeaters. If you do not already own a digital TV/tuner you can very cheaply add a digital tuner to most TVs/VCRs. Please look at the information here and here for guidance. There is a postcode checker on the digitaluk site which gives date and transmitter information however for those interested in the detail if you click on trade view (near the top of that page) you will see a lot more interesting information such as coverage prediction, channel changes and future changes rolling into 2012/13.

A less well known fact is that the power output of 4 of the 6 digital transponders (transmitters) will increase by 10 fold on 7th April with the remaining two increasing to full power in 2012/2013. This means that those with borderline digital reception now may find they will receive a good signal after the 7th April 2010.

A warning. Beware of unsolicited callers offering to replace your aerial or even sell you a Freesat installation on the pretence that you will not be able to receive TV after April. Apparently there is at least one company in Somerset doing just this. If you have any concerns talk to someone you can trust or phone the Digital UK helpline on 08456 50 50 50. Generally speaking if you can get a good picture now then your aerial installation should be OK for digital TV.

AGM
Date: 15/02/2010

At the January meeting the EGM agreed to the AGM being put back to March 17th.

Nominations are still being sought for the Committee. If you are at all prepared to help with the Committeee in any role, or you know of someone who might be persuaded, please talk to Emie Haysom, our Secretary.

Also, if you think you might be prepared to take on the Treasurer's role in 2011, please talk to David Feather. Perhaps you know of someone who has had financial roles in their work? If committee members are made aware of this they could approach them nicely to sound them out.

Telephone numbers are in the Newsletters. Remember, without a committee there would be no West Wilts U3A.

January Monthly Meeting and March AGM
Date: 20/01/2010

The January monthly meeting in the Civic Hall will include a Special General Meeting to amend the date of the AGM to put it back to March at the request of the Treasurer. Please be there.

It will also include a talk on "Smart Technology in the home". That should be very interesting.
